Instead of burning fuel, a heat pump moves heat from the outside air. For every 1 kWh of electricity it uses, it delivers several times that in heat depending on conditions; combined with your solar system, your heating costs fall sharply.

Heating Without Fuel, Three Jobs from One System

The easiest way to understand a heat pump is to think of a fridge in reverse. A fridge takes the heat from inside and throws it out; a heat pump takes the heat from outside and brings it in. Because it does not create heat but only moves it, it delivers more heat than the electricity it uses.

What Efficiency Means: COP and SCOP

The efficiency of a heat pump is expressed as its COP. A COP of 4 means 4 kWh of heat is obtained for every 1 kWh of electricity used. That figure is not fixed: it falls as the outside air gets colder and as the operating temperature of the system rises. That is why a heat pump is far more efficient with low-temperature systems.

What Does It Change?

In a home with a heat pump there is no chimney, no fuel store, no ash and no combustion risk. The same unit reverses its cycle in summer to provide cooling, and it produces domestic hot water all year round. The heating is steady and continuous; you do not get the sharp swings between hot and cold of a boiler.

Why does it make sense to install it with a solar system?

A heat pump runs on electricity. The production on your roof directly covers the energy for heating during winter daylight hours and for cooling in summer. Planning the two together lets you get the inverter size and the panel count right from the start.

Does it work efficiently in our regional climate?
The region's winter temperatures suit air-source heat pumps well. The exact efficiency is calculated during the survey, based on the building's insulation and the system temperature.
Can I use it with my existing radiators?
It is possible if the radiators are sized to give enough heat at a low temperature; otherwise more surface area or fan coils are recommended.
Should it be installed together with a solar system?
It is not compulsory, but since a heat pump consumes electricity, installing it alongside a solar system brings the running cost down to its lowest level.
Is the outdoor unit noisy?
Modern units are quite quiet, but placement matters. We position them on an open facade where the sound will not reflect, not under a bedroom window.
Will my electricity bill not go up?
Electricity consumption rises, but total heating costs usually fall. Installed alongside a solar system, a large part of that extra consumption is covered from the roof.
