Lithium Batteries and Energy Storage
The sun produces by day and the house consumes in the evening. Lithium (LiFePO4) battery systems close that gap; they step in during an outage and let you use the energy you produce in your own home.
Do Not Let the Energy You Produce Go to Waste
Storage is the optional part of a solar system, and the part that makes the biggest difference. In a system without batteries, the surplus you produce during the day goes to the grid and you draw it back in the evening. With batteries that energy stays with you, and the house does not go dark when the power fails.
Why Lithium?
Compared with traditional lead-acid batteries, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries last longer, weigh less and handle much deeper discharge. You can safely use most of their capacity and keep their performance across thousands of charge cycles.
| Lead-acid | LiFePO4 lithium | |
|---|---|---|
| Usable capacity | About half the capacity | Most of the capacity |
| Cycle life | A few hundred cycles | A few thousand cycles |
| Weight | Noticeably heavier for the same capacity | About one third |
| Maintenance | Water level may need checking | Maintenance-free |
| Thermal behaviour | Life shortens quickly in the heat | Chemistry with high thermal stability |
Where Is It Used?
- Powering the home's critical loads during grid outages (fridge, lighting, modem, pump)
- Off-grid country houses, farms and mountain homes
- Hybrid operation with a solar system: store by day, use in the evening
- Backing up equipment at business premises that cannot tolerate an outage
- As outage backup alone, in homes with no solar system
How Much Capacity Do You Need?
The right question is not "how many kWh of battery should I buy" but "what do I want running when the power goes out". During the survey we list your critical loads, work out how many hours a day they run and recommend capacity accordingly. To give you a rough idea:
| Scenario | Typical capacity | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Critical loads only | 5 kWh | Fridge + lighting + modem, one night |
| Home comfort | 10 kWh | The above + television + a few hours of air conditioning |
| Off-grid living | 15 kWh and above | Full independence together with solar production |
Is a battery essential?
No. In a grid-connected home the bill drops without one. A battery makes sense if you want outage cover, or if you want to use the energy you produce yourself in the evening. If a hybrid inverter is chosen from the start, adding a battery later is very easy.
