Solar-Powered Agricultural Irrigation

Your Field's Energy, Right Above Your Field

The cost of irrigation comes from two places: fuel and electricity. With a diesel motor pump you pay it again every season, and with an electric pump it lands on the bill every month. In a solar system that cost turns into a one-off investment. Once the system is in place, the energy for the water is free.

How Does the System Work?

The solar panels supply direct current to the pump drive (solar inverter). The drive converts that energy into the alternating current the pump needs and automatically adjusts the pump speed to the sunlight through the day. Starting slowly with the first light of morning, the pump reaches full capacity around midday, slows again in the evening and stops on its own.

Dry-run protection, water level sensing and stopping when the tank is full are all built into the drive; you do not have to stand over the pump.

Does the panel array take land away from the field?

Usually not. The array goes at the wellhead, along the edge of the field or in an unusable corner of the plot. With a raised structure, the shaded space beneath it can also be used for storage.

What Do We Check Before Installation?

  • Pump power and type: in most cases your existing pump can be kept.
  • Well yield and dynamic water level: this is the key data that sets the panel capacity.
  • Head and pipe length: pipe diameter and friction losses are taken into account.
  • Daily water requirement: set by the crop pattern and the need per decare.
  • Site security: fencing, locks and, where needed, cameras are planned for the panel array.

Does the pump run on cloudy days?
As the sunlight drops, so does the pump speed, but it keeps delivering water as long as there is light. For critical irrigation days we recommend a hybrid drive or generator backup.
Can I use the system with my existing pump?
In most cases yes. Your pump's power and type are measured during the survey, and if it fits, the existing pump is kept.
Can I irrigate at night?
A panel system runs during the day. For night-time irrigation we plan a storage (battery) solution or a water tank filled during the day.
How many panels are needed?
The pump's power decides it. As a rough measure, we aim for installed capacity of about 1.3–1.5 times the pump power; the exact figure comes out of your well data.
Do the panels sit idle in winter?
Outside the irrigation season the same array can feed farm loads such as barn lighting, or be connected to the grid. That has to be planned from the start.
